Culture

Sitangkai in predominantly Muslim with minorities made up of tribes from different parts in nearby areas of Mindanao and as far as Luzon and the Visayas.

 

Industry

Sitangkai is mainly an agar-agar based economy wherein 80% of the population Is engaged in its farming. Fishing and other home industries serve as extra source of income

 

Festivities

A Muslim area, there are only two main events that are celebrated: the Eidil Fitri or the Hariraya Puasa and the Eidil Adha or Hariraya Haji.

 

Goods & Services

There are quite a number of Convenience store, coffee shops, Tailoring, barber shops, inter-Island sea crafts. Goods from Sabah, Malaysia are available.

 

How to get here?

From Zamboanga City, a ride to the local wharf in the town capital Bongao for the boat to Sitangkai. The Sitangkai pier is located at the middle of the sea. One has to take a banca ride to enter the town proper. It’s a slow ride wherein the banca is driven by pushing of poles in the shallow sandy bed much like the Gondola. This is why It is often referred to as the “Venice of the south”.

 

Where to stay?

There are no hotels or inns. Accommodation is usually through hospitality of friends.
